Censorship Act to be tightened

IPOH: Film censorship will be tightened under a proposed amendment to the Film Censorship Act, expected to be tabled in Parliament next year.

Home Ministry Film Censorship Control and Enforcement Division secretary Tanasengran Sinnathambi said it was in the final stages of looking into such a proposal.

“It is almost finalised. We just need to bring it to the Attorney-General’s office,” he said yesterday.

Speaking to reporters after chairing a dialogue between the division and film distributors here, Tanasengran said among the aspects that would be looked into were film processing and the amount of fines to be levied for penalties.

“We are amending the Act to suit current needs,” he said, promising that the proposed amendment would not “strangle” the film industry.

Tanasengran said the ministry was also looking into lowering the price of hologram stickers which were being sold at RM1 per piece.

“We received complaints that the price is too high,” he said.

The hologram stickers are used to indicate that optical discs like CDs and DVDs are genuine,
Earlier, during the dialogue, Tanasengran said the issue of piracy in the country was related to education, adding that consumers should be taught to go for quality.

“If they want to watch quality movies or listen to quality sounds, they should go for the original,” he said.
