Educating rural folk on consumer rights

KUALA LUMPUR: A competition aimed at increasing public awareness of consumerism was launched yesterday.

The competition, to run until June 18, is being held in conjunction with the National Consumers Day by the Federation of Malaysian Consumers Association (Fomca) in collaboration with the Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry.

There are nine categories in the competition, with prizes worth RM150,000.

Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said this year's Consumers Day celebration would be held for a month instead of only on July 26.

He said this was more effective in creating awareness of the rights of consumers.

The ministry and Fomca would hold a seminar, talks and exposition on consumerism and visit villages to spread the word on consumer rights, he added.
"People, especially in the rural areas, do not know about such rights."

Ismail said the ministry also planned to amend the Consumer Protection Act 1999 to include a provision for a committee to monitor local advertisements.

"We have submitted a proposal to the Attorney-General's Chambers that will be presented (in Parliament for approval) in March."

Present at the launch were the ministry's secretary-general, Datuk Mohd Zain Mohd Dom, his deputy Mahani Tan Abdullah and Fomca president Datuk N. Marimuthu.
